The Problem
- 13.4 million young athletes are involved in impact sports. (Football, Rugby, Lacrosse…)
- 28% of these athletes will suffer from a traumatic brain injury.
- Sub-concussions are asymptomatic and near impossible to diagnose during a game.
Currently there are no devices on the market that are able to predict a concussion. This is due to the limited nature of their solutions which rely purely on head accelerations.
Artifacts recognizes the current limitations of commercial concussion devices. As a result, our team has been working on a product that monitors multiple variables to monitor the health of the athlete. Our technology not only relies on head acceleration but also heart rate variability (HRV) to determine when a player is at risk for developing a serious head injury. HRV has been proven to be correlated with pre-concussive symptoms and this is the key to developing a device that can be used to accurately predict them and protect our athletes.
